We are Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee. We are not the milk bank, milk bank, or Tennessee Milk Bank.  For press regarding new donation drop-off spots, it is very important to note that these are Milk Drop Depots, not new milk banks.

Fact Sheet

About

  • Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee (MMBTN) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

  • Our mission is to collect, process, and dispense Pasteurized Human Donor Milk (PHDM) to preterm and other fragile infants who would not otherwise have access to human milk.

  • We opened our pasteurization facility in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in November of 2021.

  • We are the newest member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA).

    • The primary mission of HMBANA Milk Banks is to provide safe Pasteurized Donor Human Milk (PDHM) by prescription to vulnerable babies in hospital neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The secondary mission is to provide milk to other babies as needed and as available.

Who We Serve

  • Pasteurized Human Donor Milk (PHDM) is prioritized for the smallest and most medically fragile babies, for whom research shows the most positive benefits from human milk. At this time, Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee (MMBTN) distributes PDHM exclusively to hospital neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).

Our Milk Donors

  • We do not compensate milk donors. All milk donors are volunteers who produce milk in excess of their own babies’ needs.

  • Prior to approval, all donors must complete a screening interview and donor application, obtain physician's consent, and have a blood test which is covered by Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee (MMBTN).

Our Response to the Recent Formula Shortage

  • Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee (MMBTN) is working towards the goal to have an out-patient program to provide Pasteurized Human Donor Milk (PHDM) to babies as needed and as available in 2023.  It takes a significant number of resources to collect, process, and dispense PHDM. Since MMBTN just opened our pasteurization facility in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in November of 2021, we must first make certain our production is able to meet the demand of the hospital neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).

  • Many of the longer-established Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) members have out-patient programs that offer milk by prescription to babies at home. Pasteurized Donor Human Milk (PDHM) can be substituted for standard infant formulas. It cannot be substituted for semi-elemental formulas since such formulas are "partially digested", if you will, and our milk has been pasteurized, but not otherwise manipulated.

  • We are currently experiencing an uptick in mothers calling to donate their extra milk - we have AMAZING committed donor mothers in Tennessee - known as the "Volunteer State".

  • We are currently forwarding requests for milk to Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA).
