Donor Milk To Go

Supporting Your Baby's Health Beyond the Hospital

Mothers’ Milk Bank of Tennessee proudly offers Donor Milk to Go—a convenient program that allows families to receive safe, pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM) at the time of hospital discharge. Families may obtain up to 10 bottles per baby, ensuring continued access to optimal nutrition while maternal milk supply is being established or stabilized.

Our Donor Milk to Go™ program supports hospitals in providing short-term outpatient PDHM to infants who need supplemental feeding after leaving the hospital.

Handling and Storage Practices

To ensure the safety of each feeding, it is important to follow our handling and storage guidelines.

Why is there a processing fee?

There are significant costs associated with the screening and processing necessary for the medically fragile infants that we serve. The processing fee covers the cost of donor screening, nutritional analysis, pasteurization, microbiological testing, and storage. The processing fee is $14.95 per bottle (each bottle is 3.3 oz).

What if I cannot afford the processing fee?

Thanks to the generosity of our financial donors, we are able to waive or discount the processing fees to qualifying households based on a sliding scale.

If your household qualifies for assistance, please email us at info@milkbanktn.org with the following information:

  • Parent or Guardian's Name

  • Expected Discharge Date

  • Baby's Name and Date of Birth

  • The name of the hospital that baby is being discharged from

  • Proof of eligibility for assistance.

  • Acceptable proof includes one of the following: copy of W2 from most recent tax year, proof of state or federal assistance, most recent paystub for heads of household.

Is donor milk safe?

The safety of each ounce of milk we dispense is always our top priority. Our commitment to the highest quality and safety of pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM) is demonstrated by our evidence-based standards for pasteurization and processing.

  • We employ the Holder pasteurization technique, which research indicates preserves a higher concentration of the protective immune factors found in human milk that are essential for infants.

  • Our microbiological sampling protocol involves randomly selecting a sample from each batch (after pasteurization), which is then sent to an independent, accredited third-party lab for bacteriological culture analysis prior to distribution.

  • We conduct nutritional analysis utilizing the Miris Analyzer which allows us to provide accurate nutritional content of each bottle of PDHM dispensed.

  • We are regulated and inspected as food manufacturers by the FDA and comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
